First Annual Katstrong Golden Hoops Event
Ten schools and organizations from across the Rio Grande Valley participated in the first annual Katstrong Golden Hoops Event held on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the Raymondville Early College High School gymnasium.
The event was held as the regional qualifier for special needs athletes to have an opportunity to advance to the state level. "Raymondville was selected this year as the site for the regional level of competition. Every athlete had the chance to qualify for the state competition," explained event coordinator Sandra Nieto, "So, along with having fun, the athletes were trying to advance to state."
A parade of teams was held in the main gym followed by the lighting of a ceremonial torch to kick off the day of competition at 9:30 a.m.
The event saw special needs athletes from 8 years of age to 55 year-olds compete in dribbling, passing, and shooting skills.
Volunteers from RECHS and Myra Green Middle School, as well as community members, were on hand to escort the athletes to their events and cheer on their performances.
"All the volunteers helped make the event a huge success," added Nieto, "I can't thank the student volunteers and community members enough for all their support. It was a great experience for everyone involved."
All athletes were awarded medals for their efforts and created positive memories with their teammates and family members.
A dance was held after lunch to celebrate the day of competition.
